Event Details

This course will discuss the effects of childhood physical, sexual, and verbal abuse, as well as neglect. The cultural lenses which affect the way child abuse is viewed and experienced will also be explored. Special attention will be given to the ways mental health professionals can apply an understanding of awareness, knowledge, skills, identity, societal trauma, and cultural humility to their work with ethnically diverse families. The presenter will provide an overview of the ways cultural context can influence the dynamics of child abuse and neglect and the ways to enhance interactions and interventions with ethnically diverse families to promote safety and trust. The presenter, a researcher, licensed clinician, and survivor, interweaves case studies and poetry to illuminate the key messages of the presentation.
